Sarah’s Guide to The 7 Bergen Mountains (7-Fjellsturen)

Updated: Oct 25, 2023

Sarah is currently a 4th year Commerce student who spent the winter semester of 3rd year in Bergen, Norway. Sarah's love for hiking led her to accomplish all 7 of these beautiful hikes during her semester abroad.

Interviewing Sarah was such an amazing experience, as she gave us many insider tips on what to expect on every hike!

When hiking anywhere in Bergen Sarah recommends that you use the All Trails app so you are able to access the routes, read the reviews and pick the best option for you!

1. Floyen:

very classic Bergen

Smallest mountain, paved path 20 mins ish each way that starts right in the city centre near Starbucks. Also a tram but it’s expensive and such an easy nice walk. Touristy, but worth the trip to see the view and the goats + a cute cafe and shop, ice cream etc. at the top. Also good for running/hill sprints. In the winter if there is a lot of snow you can sled down it. On your way down, stop at the 3 Kroner sausage stand (best and oldest in Bergen) and get either the reindeer sausage or the special. Tell the worker to put what they suggest on it.

2. Ulriken:

Lots and lots of stairs - the highest mountain in Bergen.

A good workout, pretty views also has a

gondola you can take up and or down,

and a really nice restaurant on top that

has the best Bergen fish soup.

3. Lyderhorn:

Starts easy, gets incrementally harder.

Basically a little bit of rock climbing

at the end

- beware if it’s raining probably

not the best to do it.

Very short though so definitely

manageable. No amenities at top.

4. Sandviksfjellet:

Nothing too special, however those trails (behind Hatleberg) are really nice - Munkebotn is very nice winding paved path good for running or walks with a nice view at the top. No amenities at top.

5. Løvstakken

Sarah's favourite.

Offers a 360 view of Bergen

- mountains and on one side and

city and sea on the other.

A good place to stop, make sure you walk all the way around the top to see all the angles.

No amenities at top.

6. Damsgårdsfjellet

A quick but nice hike. A bit more climb like as opposed to trail, but not as intense as some of the Lyderhorn paths. Don’t do when it’s icy, pretty view at top especially of city. A little harder to reach by bus (along with Lyderhorn) but still manageable. No amenities at top.

7. Rundemanen

I like the top of this one - not a big view of Bergen but of a valley instead. There is a decent path - could be good for running or a longer but chill hike. No amenities at top.

The real challenge:

7 mountain hike - aprox 40kms

- All trails for route, but can modify if you like

- Order is dam, Lyderhorn, løvstakken, then Ulriken, Floyen, rundemanen, sandvik so take that into consideration with amenities

- Some paths/people do the horseshoe route behind ulriken to floyen instead of going down and up. This is an extra 4-6 hours (I’ve heard) and nothing too special - lots of ppl do it by accident then regret it - but if you want to add the challenge/kms go for it

- For all of the hikes you do - really check the weather and pack well. It is hot at the bottom, but gets so cold at the top of some of the mountains. It is common depending on the season for it to be just raining on the ground but snowing/hailing on the top so take that into consideration when planning!
