Interview With A Stockholm Local

Last month I sat down with Stockholm local, Carl, who is a third-year student and is currently on Exchange at Queen’s University, from the Stockholm School of Economics.

Carl shared tips for incoming exchange students to Stockholm. Tips include where to live as an exchange student, what Instagram accounts to follow, the best ways to find out about outdoor trips, and recommendations on where you should travel around Sweden.

Where to live if you are an avid outdoor enthusiast exchange student studying in Sweden:

As a student it is desirable to be close to campus and close to downtown. As an outdoor enthusiast it is desirable to live among nature. Stockholm offers a happy medium with accommodations near large parks and near the water. Carl suggests that if residence is available, you should try to live in residence to meet other exchange students. It is nice to live in the city center however it can be expensive. The area north and west of the city center is a good compromise. Specifically near Stockholm University is a nice area. It is close to downtown while still being next to a large park and next to the water. It is the perfect place for an outdoor enthusiast exchange student.

Best ways to find out about outdoor trips as an exchange student:

As an exchange student it can be overwhelming to tackle planning an outdoor trip on your own in a new city. The school you are attending will likely have an outdoors club with many resources for you. If not, there are some amazing blogs you can read or paid tours you can participate in. Feel free to check out the links below!

Where you should travel around Sweden, as an outdoor enthusiast exchange student:

  1. Tyresta National Park - close to the city

  2. Abisko National Park - midnight sun, northern lights, mountains

  3. Fulufjället National Park - tall waterfalls and deep forests

  4. Stora Karlsö Island - nature reserve

  5. Stenshuvud National Park - mountains, forest, beaches

If traveling during the winter months, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are great ways to explore these national parks.
