An Exchange Student’s Guide to Exploring Scandinavia in the Winter

Updated: Nov 7, 2023

Considering heading to Scandinavia during the winter? Book your ticket because there are some amazing things to see and do! Below are 4 recommendations from a Canadian student who did a semester in Stockholm in 2023.

Josh is currently a 4th year Commerce student who spent the winter semester of 3rd year in Stockholm, Sweden. Josh's sense of adventure led him to experience it all in Scandinavia; from skiing, to dog-sledding, skating, and socializing with new friends it's easy to see that Scandinavia has so much to offer!

1. Ski trip to Lapland

A ski trip to Lapland in January promises an array of winter experiences, immersed in the natural beauty of the Arctic. Adventurers that Josh experienced include skiing surrounded by a panorama of snow-draped firs and frozen lakes. In addition to skiing, he mentioned dog-sledding, which is an iconic Lapland experience not to be missed. The thrill of dashing through the snow-covered terrain on a dog-sled ride, led by a team of spirited huskies is an experience visitors often love. Visitors can also participate in snowmobiling excursions, exploring the expansive winter landscape. As the Arctic night falls, you can’t miss the Northern Lights. This was something Josh and his friends had never experienced before, but it is an unforgettable memory associated with this trip. With the possibility of encountering local Sami culture, trying authentic Lappish cuisine, and indulging in the warm hospitality of the region, a ski trip to Lapland in January guarantees an unforgettable blend of adventure, natural beauty, and cultural enrichment. Be sure to check this out if you’re in Scandinavia during the ski season.

2. Kungsträdgården Ice Skating

Ice skating in Kungsträdgården, located in the heart of Stockholm, is a popular winter pastime; you can really experience the essence of this Nordic city. As the serene park transforms into a glistening winter wonderland, the frozen ice of the central square becomes a hub of festive energy not only around the holiday season, but throughout the winter too! Skaters of all ages and skill levels gracefully glide across the glassy ice, their laughter and rosy cheeks reflecting the joy of the season. Against the backdrop of historic buildings and twinkling lights, the experience becomes a picturesque blend of tradition and modernity. There are stands that sell hot chocolate and pastries! The camaraderie and young spirit of the skaters create an enchanting atmosphere, making ice skating in Kungsträdgården a quintessential Stockholm winter experience.
