Hey friends!
Hope this letter finds you well and ready for a frosty tale! I had the exhilarating (or some might say, insane) experience of taking the Polar Plunge in Scandinavia where I’m from, and I wanted to share it with you.
Picture this: a serene Nordic landscape covered in a blanket of pristine white snow, with icy waters daring you to defy the cold. That scene awaited me as I ventured to Torneträsk, a stunning lake nestled in the heart of Swedish Lapland. It was a surreal winter wonderland I had only seen in pictures before, and little did I know that this icy oasis would become the backdrop for one of the most memorable adventures of my life.
Now, who in their right mind would willingly subject themselves to subzero temperatures, you ask? Well, my fellow plunge-takers were a motley crew of brave souls – a mix of locals and fellow thrill-seekers from around the globe. There's something about facing the icy unknown together that bonds people like nothing else.

The time of year? Ah, that's where it gets interesting. It was mid-December, the heart of winter in Scandinavia. The air was crisp, the days were short, and the Northern Lights danced overhead, casting an ethereal glow on the landscape. The lake, normally frozen solid, had a small section cleared for the daring Polar Plunge participants. And yes, the water temperature was hovering around a teeth-chattering 2 degrees Celsius (35.6 degrees Fahrenheit).
As the moment approached, I found myself questioning my sanity. Was I really about to plunge into freezing water in the dead of winter? But then, a mix of excitement and camaraderie took over. We gathered at the edge of the ice, a sea of colorful swimsuits and nervous laughter. The anticipation was palpable, and the cheers from the spectators echoed across the frozen lake.
When the time came, we charged into the icy water, screaming and laughing. The shock of the cold hit us hard, but the adrenaline surged, and the frigid water became strangely invigorating. It was a bizarre mix of pain and pleasure, I couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of accomplishment.
The post-plunge rituals were just as important as the plunge itself. After hastily drying off and donning layers upon layers of warm clothing, we gathered around a crackling bonfire, swapping stories and sharing hot drinks to thaw our frozen bones. It was in those moments of warmth and camaraderie that I realized the Polar Plunge was about more than just braving the cold – it was a celebration of life, friendship, and the sheer joy of stepping out of your comfort zone.
So, friends, if you ever find yourself yearning for an adventure that will test your limits and leave you with unforgettable memories, I wholeheartedly recommend taking the Polar Plunge in Scandinavia. It's an experience that will not only give you bragging rights but also a newfound appreciation for the beauty and resilience of the human spirit.
Stay warm (but not too warm!),
David (Queen’s Commerce Exchange Student 2023)
